Not all kitchens are created equal. Sometimes the footprint of a home doesn’t always allow you borrow space from other areas. This doesn’t mean there aren’t other options out there to make a kitchen feel more open!
Here are some tips to stretch a kitchen without an entire remodel!
Paint walls white and/or create a low contract color scheme
White is a small kitchen’s best friend! White reflects light which enhances the sense of space. When cabinetry, counter tops, walls, and the ceiling are all white, it creates a seamless space without boundaries. A kitchen scheme with little difference between the colors of walls, counter tops, cabinetry, and woodwork makes a space appear larger than it really is. However, not everyone is thrilled with the idea of having a stark white space. If this fits the bill for you, keep your contrasts to a minimum and keep all shades ‘light and airy’.
Glass cabinet doors / Open shelving
Another way to enhance the feel of a kitchen is to replace some cabinet doors with glass inserts. No one can argue that cabinets take up space. Adding this extra sight line brings the eyes through, making the space feel more open.
Welcome in natural light
While we aren’t all able to add windows in our kitchen, most kitchens have at least one! Use this window to your advantage! Keep window treatments to a minimum. If you must have some kind of drape, keep it sheer to avoid obstructing any light you do have.
Cut out bulky furnishings
This goes with the same concept as adding open shelving or glass doors. If your kitchen has an island or peninsula, try opening it up! Unfortunately, cabinets block sight lines. Having an open shelving island or utilizing a table will create a more appealing view throughout the kitchen and avoid feeling cramped.
Small kitchens only have so much counter space. Keeping a small kitchen clean is the biggest key to success when it comes to making the space feel larger. While this may mean learning some new organization techniques, it is well worth it for the benefit of a seemingly larger kitchen.
